Family adventure Colorado

As the first day of school loomed closer, I wanted to plan one last summer trip—a late-summer getaway to the stunning landscapes of Colorado. With my 18-year-old son, 16-year-old daughter, 10-year-old grandson, and his mother, my oldest daughter (age 33), we embarked on a family road trip that would take us through some of Colorado’s most breathtaking and unique destinations. 

We’ve always loved Colorado, especially in winter when the mountains call us for our annual ski trips. But this time, we decided to experience the state in a different light: during summer, when Colorado’s wild beauty is at its peak. Each family member chose a must-see destination in the state. After researching their picks, I mapped out a route covering over 1,300 miles in six days—an ambitious but thrilling journey across the Rockies and beyond. With everyone on board, I shared the plan: where we’d be going, how long we’d be on the road each day, and, most importantly, what adventures awaited us along the way. I couldn’t wait. I love listening to ‘70s and ‘80s music while taking in the scenery, and we were headed to some pretty spectacular places.

Day 1: Denver to the Great Sand Dunes National Park

After flying into Denver, we wasted no time hitting the road for a 4.5-hour drive to our first stop: Great Sand Dunes National Park. Nestled against the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the dunes—some reaching over 750 feet tall—create a striking and surreal landscape that seems out of place in the Rockies. But this unique environment is a treasure, with opportunities to hike the dunes, sandboard, and even splash in Medano Creek during spring and early summer. 

Our first night was spent in a rented RV right next to the park. Watching the sunset paint the dunes in shades of orange and pink was mesmerizing, and waking up early to catch the sunrise was worth every minute. The park’s remoteness means the night sky is a stargazer’s dream, with a dazzling array of constellations visible.

Day 2: Del Norte, Silverton, and the Million Dollar Highway to Ouray

After soaking in the alien beauty of the dunes, we grabbed breakfast at a quaint local diner in Del Norte, where time seems to move slower, and the locals greet you with a smile. From there, we set out toward Silverton, driving through the San Juan Mountains. Silverton is a former mining town with deep historical roots. Once a bustling hub during the gold and silver rushes, today it’s a time capsule of the Old West. Consider taking a ride on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, a steam train that takes you through stunning mountain scenery.

Heart-pounding drive along the Million Dollar Highway

This 25-mile stretch between Silverton and Ouray is considered one of the most beautiful and dangerous roads in the country. The history behind this highway is fascinating—it was originally built in the late 1880s as a toll road to transport ore from the mines. Some say it gets its name from the million-dollar views, while others claim it’s from the high cost of construction, or even the supposed value of gold still buried in the fill dirt used to build it. With its narrow lanes, sharp curves, and sheer drop-offs with no guardrails, this road is an adventure in itself.

Our destination was Ouray, a town known as the “Switzerland of America.” The town is famous for its hot springs, Victorian architecture, and incredible mountain views. We took time to explore the streets, lined with historic buildings and small shops. For those seeking adventure, nearby Box Canyon Falls is a dramatic waterfall hidden in a steep gorge—a short hike reveals its thunderous beauty.

The day ended in Telluride

A charming mountain town known for its box canyon setting and ski resort. We stayed at a resort in the ski village and took the free gondola into town for sightseeing and dinner. The gondola ride itself offers unbeatable views, especially as the sun sets over the San Juans. Telluride’s rich history, from its mining roots to its transformation into a world-class ski destination, is woven into every street and building. Don’t miss a visit to the Telluride Historical Museum for a deep dive into the area’s past.

Day 3: Dinosaur National Monument and Glenwood Springs

The following day, we set out on our longest drive, heading to Dinosaur National Monument, which spans the Colorado-Utah border. Along the way, we passed the Grand Mesa, the world’s largest flat-topped mountain, and cruised through the desert near Fruita and Grand Junction. Fruita is famous among mountain bikers for its epic trails, while Grand Junction is the gateway to Colorado’s wine country.

Dinosaur National Monument – A Journey Back in Time

Our adventure continued with a visit to Dinosaur National Monument, a destination that brings prehistoric history to life. Located on the Colorado-Utah border, the monument’s highlight is the Quarry Exhibit Hall, where over 1,500 dinosaur fossils remain embedded in a towering rock wall. Walking through the exhibit feels like stepping back millions of years, as you can see and even touch bones from giants like Allosaurus and Diplodocus. My grandson was thrilled to trace the shapes of these ancient creatures and imagine a world where dinosaurs roamed freely.

There’s more to Dinosaur National Monument than fossils

The landscape is marked by rugged canyons carved by the Green and Yampa Rivers, offering dramatic views that contrast stark desert with lush river valleys. Scenic drives like the Harpers Corner Road provide sweeping panoramas, while trails such as the Fossil Discovery Trail let you explore more fossils in a natural setting. We were also captivated by the petroglyphs left by the Fremont people, adding a layer of cultural history to this already fascinating park.

Whether you’re a dinosaur enthusiast or simply enjoy stunning landscapes, Dinosaur National Monument is a unique blend of natural beauty and ancient history that left our entire group in awe.

Glenwood Springs

From there, we headed to Glenwood Springs, where we stayed at the historic Hotel Colorado. Glenwood Springs is known for its geothermal hot springs, perfect for unwinding after a day of travel. The town itself is delightful, with charming shops and excellent restaurants. If you have extra time, the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park offers cave tours and rides perched high above the town.

Days 4-5: Breckenridge Bliss

Our journey continued to Breckenridge, a town that holds a special place in our hearts. Known for its winter sports, Breckenridge is just as magical in the summer. The town’s vibrant Main Street, lined with colorful Victorian buildings, is perfect for strolling, shopping, and enjoying some excellent eateries.

A Hidden Gem

One highlight of Breckenridge is the hidden gem Isak Heartstone, a giant wooden troll tucked away in the forest. This 15-foot troll, created by Danish artist Thomas Dambo, is a whimsical attraction that both kids and adults love. It’s a short and easy hike from town, offering a playful break from more intense mountain adventures.

During our two-day stay

We took advantage of the many hiking trails around Breckenridge. For those looking to challenge themselves, Quandary Peak, one of Colorado’s 14ers, is just a short drive away. If hiking isn’t your speed, the Breckenridge Fun Park offers a mountain coaster, zip-lining, and scenic chairlift rides with panoramic views.

Day 6: Boulder’s Cool Vibe and a Change of Plans

Our final day brought us to Boulder, where we met up with my friend Allyson for lunch. Boulder is known for its laid-back vibe, outdoor culture, and the lively Pearl Street Mall—a pedestrian-friendly area filled with unique shops, street performers, and some of the best coffee spots around. We originally planned to head to Estes Park and the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park, but wildfires altered our route. Nevertheless, Boulder’s mix of urban charm and mountain scenery was the perfect way to end our trip.

Wrapping Up: Lessons Learned and New Experiences

The next morning, we headed back to Denver to catch our flight home to Charlotte. Reflecting on the trip, I was reminded how much I love traveling light.
